Comparison of the two processors

Comparing the AMD Ryzen 5 3500U With the Intel Core i5-8265U you will quickly find that the two processors are more similar than you thought. Both mobile processors have 4 cores and support SMT or hyper-threading. As a result, the processors are able to work up to 8 threads simultaneously.

The Intel Core i5-8265U uses Whiskey Lake CPU cores manufactured in 14 nm while the AMD Ryzen 5 3500U uses the Picasso Design (Zen + Kernel) and manufactured in 12 nm. Both processors support up to 32 GB of Type DDR4-2400. It is recommended to use the dual channel mode using both memory channels, as this also significantly increases the speed of the internal graphics.

While the processors come to approx AMD approves the AMD Ryzen 5 3500U up to 3.0 GHz, while in the Intel Core i5-8265U is already at 2.3 GHz. This also results in the approximately 10 percent better performance of the AMD processor. In the case of a single load, however, the Intel processor is a bit faster. In practice, one should not detect any difference in performance between the two processors.

The biggest difference in performance is available at the internal graphics card (IGPU) over which both processors have. The Intel UHD Graphics 620 operates at a maximum of 1.10 GHz and has 24 execution units (192 shader). On the other hand, the AMD Radeon Vega 8 is 8 graphics with 512 shaders. The significantly higher shader number is directly reflected on the performance: The AMD IGPU is a whopping 3x as fast as the Intel counterpart.

Both mobile processors are classified in the 15 Watt TDP class. The processors are soldered with the motherboard and are therefore not interchangeable.
