AMD A8-7100 vs MediaTek MT6589T

Last updated:
The AMD A8-7100 is a desktop processor (APU) from AMD based on the Kaveri architecture (Steamroller), designed for inexpensive desktop PCs and all-in-one systems.

Its target group was users looking for an integrated graphics solution for everyday tasks and simple PC games. The MediaTek MT6589T is a System-on-a-Chip (SoC) from MediaTek, based on the ARM Cortex-A9 architecture, and was specially developed for energy-efficient mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets.

It was intended to provide sufficient performance for typical mobile applications and multimedia. Both processors are manufactured using the 28 nm fabrication process. The AMD A8-7100 uses four Steamroller cores and features 4 MB of Level-3 cache, but no Level-2 cache. The MediaTek MT6589T integrates four ARM Cortex-A9 cores with 1 MB of Level-2 cache, but without Level-3 cache.

In terms of computing performance, the AMD A8-7100 shows significantly higher single-core performance; its Cinebench R23 single-core score is considerably higher than that of the MediaTek MT6589T. The AMD A8-7100 is also likely to be superior in multi-core performance, as its architecture is designed for desktop applications.

For gaming scenarios, the AMD A8-7100, with its integrated AMD Radeon R5 (Kaveri) graphics unit and a memory bandwidth of 26 GB/s, clearly has an advantage for PC games. The PowerVR SGX544 graphics unit of the MediaTek MT6589T, with 4 GB/s memory bandwidth, is optimized for mobile games and cannot keep up with the demands of traditional PC games.

As a desktop APU, the AMD A8-7100 has a higher thermal design power (TDP), which is designed for stationary systems. The MediaTek MT6589T, on the other hand, is designed for maximum energy efficiency for mobile operation and has a significantly lower TDP. Both processors are older models that are no longer newly available on the market; the AMD A8-7100 can be found in used PCs, while the MediaTek MT6589T is built into older mobile devices.

The AMD A8-7100 is suitable for desktop systems with basic requirements and light PC gaming performance. The MediaTek MT6589T is a solution for mobile devices with a focus on energy efficiency.
