AMD A4-4000 vs AMD FX-6300

Last updated:
The AMD A4-4000 is an Accelerated Processing Unit (APU) based on the Richland (Piledriver) architecture, designed in mid-2013 for entry-level systems.

Manufactured using the 32 nm process, this processor features two CPU cores. It has 0 MB L2 cache and 1 MB L3 cache, as well as an integrated graphics unit of type AMD Radeon HD 7480D. Its maximum memory bandwidth is 21 GB/s. The single-core performance is sufficient for basic tasks such as web browsing and word processing.

It is not intended for more demanding calculations or graphics-intensive applications. Power consumption is comparatively low. The AMD FX-6300 is a pure CPU processor from the Vishera (Bulldozer) architecture, launched at the end of 2012 and aimed at mainstream users seeking higher computing performance.

It was also manufactured using the 32 nm process and offers six CPU cores. With 0 MB L2 cache and 8 MB L3 cache, as well as support for PCIe 3.0, it surpasses the AMD A4-4000 in data processing. The maximum memory bandwidth is 30 GB/s. Its single-core performance is noticeably higher, and the multi-core performance is significantly more pronounced thanks to the higher core count, which predisposes it for more complex applications.

A separate graphics card is necessary for operation. In a comparison of single-core performance, the AMD FX-6300 shows significantly higher computing power. For multi-core tasks, the performance difference is even more significant, as the AMD FX-6300 with six cores offers much stronger parallel processing than the two cores of the AMD A4-4000.

For gaming scenarios, the AMD FX-6300 is the clearly superior choice, provided it is combined with a dedicated graphics card. Its higher core count and improved per-core performance enable a smoother gaming experience in many games. The AMD A4-4000 with its integrated graphics unit is only suitable for very simple or older games at low settings.

The power consumption and Thermal Design Power (TDP) of the AMD FX-6300 are higher than those of the AMD A4-4000 due to its higher computing performance and core count; the A4-4000 represents a more energy-efficient option for basic systems. Regarding price-performance ratio, the AMD A4-4000 was a cost-effective complete solution for simple desktop PCs at its introduction.

The AMD FX-6300 offered good value for money for users who needed higher computing performance and multi-core capabilities and were willing to add a dedicated graphics card. Both processors are primarily available on the used market. In summary, the AMD A4-4000 offers a cost-effective basis with integrated graphics for everyday tasks.

The AMD FX-6300, on the other hand, delivers significantly more computing power and is better suited for multitasking, gaming (with dedicated graphics), and more demanding software. For a budget-limited system primarily used for office and web, the AMD A4-4000 is sufficient. For applications requiring higher computing performance, the AMD FX-6300 is the better choice.
