Intel Xeon E-2456 vs Intel Xeon E-2436

Last updated:
The Intel Xeon E-2456 and the Intel Xeon E-2436 were released in the fourth quarter of 2023 and are aimed at small businesses for use in entry-level servers.

Both processors are based on the Raptor Lake architecture and are manufactured using the 10 nm process. They each have six cores and twelve threads. The Intel Xeon E-2456 offers a higher base clock rate and an increased maximum turbo clock compared to the Intel Xeon E-2436.

Both CPUs use a 12 MB L2 cache and an 18 MB L3 cache. The maximum memory bandwidth is 77 GB/s, with support for modern standards such as PCIe 5.0. In benchmarks, the Intel Xeon E-2456 delivers stronger single-core and multi-core performance due to its higher clock speeds. In gaming scenarios, the Intel Xeon E-2456 theoretically achieves better results, as games often benefit from high clock rates.

However, since both CPUs were developed for server environments without an integrated graphics unit, use in this area is rather uncommon. Regarding power consumption, the Intel Xeon E-2436 has a Thermal Design Power of 65 watts, while the Intel Xeon E-2456 is specified at 80 watts.

This makes the Intel Xeon E-2436 the more suitable choice for systems with lower cooling capacity. The price-performance ratio is often more favorable with the Intel Xeon E-2436, as it offers similar features. The Intel Xeon E-2456 is recommended when maximum computing speed within this class is necessary for server workloads.

Intel Xeon E-2456

  • High clock frequencies of up to 5.1 GHz for fast calculations
  • Six processor cores with twelve threads based on Raptor Lake
  • Support for modern PCIe 5.0 standard
  • Optimized for compute-intensive tasks in entry-level servers

Intel Xeon E-2436

  • Efficient operation through a Thermal Design Power of 65 watts
  • Balanced ratio between purchase price and computing power
  • Identical cache sizes and memory bandwidth as the larger model
  • Suitable for compact server housings with lower cooling requirements
