Intel Pentium J4205 vs Intel Pentium Silver J5040

The Intel Pentium J4205 (Apollo Lake) is an energy-efficient processor for low-cost systems and basic tasks.

The Intel Pentium Silver J5040 (Gemini Lake) is an evolution for the same market, but offers higher performance and efficiency.

Both CPUs are manufactured by Intel using the 14-nm process and feature four cores and four threads, sufficient for standard tasks. The Intel Pentium Silver J5040 significantly outperforms the Intel Pentium J4205 in single-core and multi-core performance. Performance differences in benchmarks significantly exceed the 10-percent mark, indicating noticeably faster processing for everyday applications.

The J5040 also has 4 MB of Level 3 Cache, while the J4205 has 2 MB of Level 3 Cache. Neither processor is primarily designed for gaming. The Intel Pentium J4205 uses Intel HD Graphics 505, and the Intel Pentium Silver J5040 uses Intel UHD Graphics 605 with slightly better graphics performance.

The higher memory bandwidth of the J5040 (38 GB/s compared to 30 GB/s) supports this. Both CPUs are characterized by very low power consumption and heat generation, ideal for fanless systems. Without current market prices, an exact evaluation of the price-performance ratio is difficult. However, the Intel Pentium Silver J5040 offers clearly superior overall performance.

The Intel Pentium J4205 is suitable for basic requirements and maximum cost efficiency. For more responsive use and better multimedia capabilities, the Intel Pentium Silver J5040 is the more recommended option.
