Intel Pentium E5700 vs Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400

The Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400 (Yorkfield, Penryn) and the Intel Pentium E5700 (Wolfdale, Penryn) are desktop processors manufactured by Intel using the 45 nm fabrication process.

The Core 2 Quad Q8400, with its four cores and 4 MB L2 cache, was aimed at mainstream users requiring multitasking and higher performance. The Pentium E5700, with two cores and 2 MB L2 cache, was designed for the entry-level segment and basic office tasks. The maximum memory bandwidth is 17 GB/s for the Q8400 and 21 GB/s for the E5700.

In terms of performance, the Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400 significantly outperforms the Intel Pentium E5700. Its four physical cores offer substantially higher performance in multithreaded applications and multitasking. Even in tasks heavily dependent on single-core performance, the Q8400 shows noticeably better performance.

For gaming scenarios, the Q8400 clearly has the advantage, enabling more stable frame rates and better compatibility, while the dual-core E5700 quickly reaches its limits here. Due to its four cores, the Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400 tends to have higher power consumption and a higher TDP than the more energy-efficient dual-core Intel Pentium E5700.

Both processors are now only available on the used market at very low prices. The Q8400 offers a better price-performance ratio for general performance improvements. The E5700 is an economical choice for systems with minimal requirements such as web browsing and word processing. For a general performance boost in older systems, the Q8400 is recommended.
