Intel Core i7-8700 vs Intel Xeon E-2176G

Last updated:
The Intel Core i7-8700 is a "Coffee Lake S" architecture desktop processor, introduced in the fourth quarter of 2017.

Manufactured using the 14nm process, it features 6 cores and 12 threads with clock speeds up to 4.6 GHz and 12 MB of Level 3 cache. It targets the mainstream desktop market for gaming and general productivity. It is characterized by integrated Intel UHD Graphics 630 and a TDP of 65 watts. Its maximum memory bandwidth is 43 GB/s.

The Intel Xeon E-2176G, also "Coffee Lake S" and produced using the 14nm process, was launched in the third quarter of 2018.

With 6 cores, 12 threads, and clock speeds up to 4.7 GHz, as well as 12 MB of Level 3 cache, it is designed for entry-level servers and professional workstations requiring ECC memory support. It also features Intel UHD Graphics 630 with 43 GB/s memory bandwidth and a TDP of 71 watts. In Cinebench R23 single-core performance, the Intel Xeon E-2176G outperforms the Intel Core i7-8700 by more than 20 percent.

In other benchmarks, the performance differences between both processors are minor, falling below the 10 percent threshold, indicating comparable computing power. For gaming, both CPUs with 6 cores and 12 threads are well-suited, with the Intel Core i7-8700 being the more common choice. The integrated graphics are unsuitable for demanding games.

The Intel Core i7-8700 has a slightly lower TDP of 65 watts than the Intel Xeon E-2176G with 71 watts. The Intel Core i7-8700 offers a better price-performance ratio on the used market for gaming and general desktop applications. The Intel Xeon E-2176G is usually more expensive due to its professional features and server orientation.

For gaming and everyday tasks, the Intel Core i7-8700 is recommended, while the Intel Xeon E-2176G is the better choice for workstations and servers focusing on stability.
