Intel Core i5-8500 vs Intel Core i5-8265U

The Intel Core i5-8500 was designed as a desktop processor of the Coffee Lake S architecture for use in stationary systems, while the Intel Core i5-8265U is based on the Whiskey Lake U architecture and was developed for mobile devices such as notebooks.

Both processors are manufactured by Intel using the 14-nanometer process. The Intel Core i5-8500 has six physical cores, whereas the Intel Core i5-8265U uses four cores and eight threads. In gaming scenarios, the Intel Core i5-8500 performs better, as the integrated Intel UHD Graphics 630, together with the higher memory bandwidth of 43 GB/s, enables a more stable frame rate.

The Intel Core i5-8265U, with the Intel UHD Graphics 620 and 38 GB/s bandwidth, is designed more for simple applications. A striking contrast is evident in the power consumption: the desktop processor has a TDP of 65 watts and supports PCIe 3.0. The mobile model, on the other hand, operates with a TDP of only 15 watts.

In terms of price, the Intel Core i5-8500 offers a good basis for office systems, while the Intel Core i5-8265U is usually permanently integrated into notebooks. For computationally intensive tasks, the recommendation falls on the desktop model; for mobile flexibility, on the U-model.
