Intel Core i5-6500T vs Intel Processor N97

Last updated:
The Intel Core i5-6500T, a processor codenamed Skylake S, was introduced in the third quarter of 2015 and targeted energy-efficient desktop systems as well as compact PCs.

It is manufactured using the 14 nm process and features a PCIe 3.0 interface. The Intel Core i5-6500T offers 4 cores and 4 threads and is equipped with a 6 MB Level 3 cache and Intel HD Graphics 530. Its maximum memory bandwidth is 34 GB/s. In older single-core tasks, it shows solid performance, while multi-core performance is sufficient for everyday applications of its generation.

The Intel Processor N97, based on the Alder Lake N architecture, was launched in the first quarter of 2023 and is designed for entry-level desktops, mini-PCs, and embedded systems where low power consumption and cost are priorities.

It is manufactured using the more modern 10 nm process and also supports PCIe 3.0. This processor features 4 cores and 4 threads based on the efficient Gracemont architecture, as well as 4 MB Level 2 cache and 6 MB Level 3 cache. Its integrated Intel UHD Graphics 24 EUs (Alder Lake) offers improved graphics performance.

The maximum memory bandwidth is 38 GB/s. In terms of benchmark performance, the Intel Processor N97 shows significantly higher performance in single-core tasks. In multi-core tasks in modern benchmarks, the Intel Processor N97 also offers noticeably better performance, while it is comparable in other multi-core tests.

Both processors are only partially suitable for gaming scenarios. The Intel Processor N97 offers slightly better performance in very light or older games compared to the Intel HD Graphics 530 of the Intel Core i5-6500T, thanks to its newer Intel UHD Graphics. Neither is intended for demanding games.

Regarding power consumption, the Intel Processor N97, with its typical TDP of only 12W, is significantly more energy-efficient than the Intel Core i5-6500T, which is designed for a TDP of 35W. This makes the Intel Processor N97 the better choice for systems where low power consumption and heat generation are crucial.

The Intel Core i5-6500T is an older model typically found in used systems today. The Intel Processor N97, on the other hand, is a newer option that offers good value for money for new, cost-effective, and energy-efficient builds. In summary, the Intel Core i5-6500T is suitable for basic desktop tasks in existing older systems.

The Intel Processor N97 is the superior choice for new, low-power systems designed for light productivity, media playback, and mini-PC operation, thanks to its modern architecture, better graphics performance, and significantly higher energy efficiency.
