Intel Core i5-14600 vs Intel Xeon X3470

Last updated:
The Intel Core i5-14600, introduced in the fourth quarter of 2023, targets the mainstream desktop market, including gamers and content creators who require high all-round performance.

It is based on the Raptor Lake S Refresh architecture and is manufactured using a modern 10 nm process. It features a hybrid architecture with 14 cores (6 performance cores and 8 efficiency cores) and 20 threads, enabling efficient task distribution. Its L2 cache is 20 MB and the L3 cache is 24 MB. The maximum memory bandwidth is 90 GB/s.

The Intel Xeon X3470, launched in the third quarter of 2009, was primarily designed for entry-level servers and workstations.

It utilizes the Lynnfield architecture and is manufactured using a 45 nm process. It offers 4 cores and 8 threads with Hyper-Threading. Its L2 cache is 8 MB, while an L3 cache is not present. The maximum memory bandwidth is 21 GB/s. In terms of single-core and multi-core performance, the Intel Core i5-14600 shows significantly higher performance.

Its modern architecture, combined with higher clock frequencies and a substantially higher core count, leads to superior computing power in all scenarios. The Intel Xeon X3470 cannot compete due to its age and architectural limitations. For gaming, the Intel Core i5-14600 is the clearly superior choice.

Its high single-core performance, the improved IPC (Instructions Per Clock cycle) of the modern architecture, and support for PCIe 5.0 for current graphics cards ensure a smooth gaming experience. The Intel Xeon X3470 is unsuitable for modern games, as its outdated architecture and limited PCIe 2.0 connectivity significantly restrict performance.

The Intel Core i5-14600 has a typical base TDP of 65W, with a maximum turbo power of up to 154W, but offers significantly higher performance per watt. The Intel Xeon X3470 has a TDP of 95W, which means a significantly higher energy consumption relative to its offered performance.

The Intel Core i5-14600 is a current processor with a corresponding new price, which nonetheless offers an excellent price/performance ratio for current applications. The Intel Xeon X3470 is only available second-hand at very low prices. However, its price/performance ratio for modern tasks is poor due to its severely limited performance.

The Intel Core i5-14600 is characterized by its superior single-core and multi-core performance, modern features like PCIe 5.0, and integrated Intel UHD Graphics 770. It is the recommended choice for almost all current application areas, from gaming to demanding productivity. As an older processor, the Intel Xeon X3470 only offers an option for very simple, basic systems or as a replacement part for historical hardware, but it is unsuitable for modern requirements.
