Intel Celeron J3455 vs Raspberry Pi 5 B (Broadcom BCM2712)

Last updated:
The Intel Celeron J3455, introduced in late 2016, targeted entry-level desktop PCs and embedded systems with a focus on low power consumption.

Manufactured by Intel using a 14nm process, it features the Apollo Lake architecture with 4 cores and 4 threads. It includes integrated Intel HD Graphics 500 and 2 MB of L3 cache, with a maximum memory bandwidth of 30 GB/s and PCIe 2.0 support. The TDP is 10W, enabling fanless operation. The Broadcom BCM2712, the heart of the Raspberry Pi 5 B released in late 2023, targets single-board computer enthusiasts and IoT projects.

Broadcom manufactures it using a 16nm process with a quad-core ARM Cortex-A76 processor. This processor has 2 MB of L2 and 2 MB of L3 cache. The Broadcom VideoCore VII graphics unit and a memory bandwidth of 17 GB/s complement the system, also with PCIe 2.0. The entire board typically consumes 3-8W under load, offering high performance per watt.

In terms of performance, the Broadcom BCM2712 significantly outperforms the Intel Celeron J3455 in both single-core and multi-core tasks. The more modern Cortex-A76 architecture enables noticeably better responsiveness and more efficient multitasking. For light gaming scenarios and emulation, the Broadcom VideoCore VII graphics of the Broadcom BCM2712 are superior to the Intel HD Graphics 500 of the Intel Celeron J3455, supported by the higher CPU performance.

The Intel Celeron J3455 is mostly found as an integrated component on motherboards. The Broadcom BCM2712 in the Raspberry Pi 5 B, as a complete single-board computer, offers an excellent performance-to-euro ratio at a competitive price, making it the more powerful option in its segment.
