Intel Celeron J1900 vs Raspberry Pi 5 B (Broadcom BCM2712)

Last updated:
The Intel Celeron J1900, based on the Bay Trail architecture, was developed for energy-efficient, fanless systems such as thin clients, NAS devices, and basic desktop PCs.

It is manufactured using the 22 nm process and features four cores. The integrated graphics unit is Intel HD Graphics (Bay Trail GT1). The Raspberry Pi 5 B, powered by the Broadcom BCM2712 processor with Cortex-A76 architecture, is aimed at developers, hobbyists, and users looking for a powerful single-board computer.

It is manufactured using the 16 nm process and also has four cores. The integrated graphics unit is the Broadcom VideoCore VII. In single-core benchmarks, the Raspberry Pi 5 B delivers significantly higher performance than the Intel Celeron J1900. The Raspberry Pi 5 B also shows considerably superior performance in multi-core applications.

This is due to the more modern architecture of the Broadcom BCM2712. The maximum memory bandwidth of the Intel Celeron J1900 is 21 GB/s via PCIe 2.0, while the Raspberry Pi 5 B achieves 17 GB/s via PCIe 2.0. For gaming scenarios, the Raspberry Pi 5 B is better equipped thanks to its more modern Broadcom VideoCore VII GPU, especially for emulation and less demanding Linux games.

The Intel Celeron J1900 with its Intel HD Graphics (Bay Trail GT1) is only suitable for very old or undemanding titles. Both processors are characterized by low power consumption. The Intel Celeron J1900 has a TDP of 10 watts, while the Raspberry Pi 5 B typically consumes between 5 and 12 watts under load.

Today, the Intel Celeron J1900 is primarily found in used or specialized embedded solutions. The Raspberry Pi 5 B offers very good value for money as a complete single-board computer. For applications requiring modern computing power, better graphics performance, and an active developer community, the Raspberry Pi 5 B is the clearly superior choice.

For extremely simple, fanless basic tasks in older systems, the Intel Celeron J1900 may still be sufficient.
