Apple A7 vs Apple A16 Bionic

Last updated:
The Apple A7 was introduced as the first 64-bit processor for mobile devices and was aimed at smartphone and tablet users.

Manufactured using the 28-nanometer process, this chip uses two computing cores. The architecture integrates a Level 2 cache of 1 megabyte and a Level 3 cache of 4 megabytes. With a memory bandwidth of 13 gigabytes per second, the Apple A7 provides a stable basis for simple applications.

The integrated PowerVR G6430 graphics solution handles visual processing. In benchmarks, the Apple A7 shows significantly lower single-core performance compared to the Apple A16 Bionic.

Energy efficiency is determined by the manufacturing process, while the thermal design was conceived for passive operation in slim enclosures. The Apple A7 is designed for basic functions in older system environments. The Apple A16 Bionic uses a modern 4-nanometer process and targets users with high demands for computing power.

The architecture features six cores and offers significantly higher cache capacities, including 20 megabytes of Level 2 cache and 24 megabytes of Level 3 cache. The memory bandwidth is 51 gigabytes per second, which optimizes data throughput. In single-core and multi-core performance, the Apple A16 Bionic massively outperforms the Apple A7.

In gaming scenarios, the 5-core Apple A16 graphics deliver superior rendering of complex content. Energy efficiency is optimized by the fine manufacturing structure, allowing for high performance with controlled heat generation. The Apple A16 Bionic is thus the suitable choice for computationally intensive tasks and demanding applications within its ecosystem.
