Monero Hashrate kH/s

The crypto currency Monero has been using the RandomX algorithm since November 2019. This PoW (proof of work) algorithm can only efficiently be calculated using a processor (CPU) or a graphics card (GPU). The CryptoNight algorithm was used for Monero until November 2019, but it could be calculated using ASICs. RandomX benefits from a high number of CPU cores, cache and a fast connection of the memory via as many memory channels as possible. Tested with XMRig v6.x under the operation system HiveOS.

The new 6-core processor from AMD, AMD Ryzen 5 5600X, is now up to 20 percent faster than its 1 year old predecessor thanks to an optimization of the cache logic and an increase in performance per clock. As a result, the new 6-core processor can now even compete with the 8-core AMD Ryzen 7 3800X from the previous year.

When comparing the AMD Ryzen 5 5600X and the AMD Ryzen 7 3800X, it is noticeable that the 8-core processor is only around 15 percent faster than its smaller and significantly cheaper brother. In single-core load scenarios, the new AMD Ryzen 5 5600X is even faster and outperforms the larger processor by almost 10 percent. Both processors can be overclocked if desired, provided the mainboard chipset supports this.

The AMD Ryzen 5 5600X is also manufactured in 7 nm at TSMC like the AMD Ryzen 7 3800X, but an optimized manufacturing process with higher clock frequencies is used. In contrast to Intel, AMD does not manufacture its processors itself, but is only responsible for the design of the CPU. The Taiwanese contract manufacturer TSMC then uses the design to produce the processors.

Both processors can handle RAM up to DDR4-3200, but higher clock frequencies of the memory modules are possible through the use of overclocking profiles or manual overclocking. DDR4-3600 runs on almost all Ryzen 3xxx and 5xxx processors without any problems. The CPUs can connect a maximum of 128 GB of RAM. ECC memory is supported, but must also be implemented on the mainboard.

Both processors do not have internal graphics (iGPU), so a dedicated graphics card is required. This can then be connected to the system via PCIe 4.0. In addition, fast M.2 SSDs can also be connected via the new PCIe 4.0 standard. With PCIe 3.0, the interface limits the speed of newer M.2 SSDs.
