Google Tensor vs Google Tensor G3

Last updated:
The Google Tensor was introduced around 2021 as Google's first in-house System-on-a-Chip (SoC) for the Pixel smartphone series.

It is based on an ARM G1 architecture manufactured with a 5 nm process, integrates an ARM Mali-G78 MP20 graphics unit, 8 MB of Level 2 cache, and offers a maximum memory bandwidth of 53 GB/s. The Google Tensor G3, its successor from 2023, also designed for Pixel smartphones, uses a more advanced ARM G3 architecture manufactured with a more efficient 4 nm process.

It contains a more modern ARM Immortalis-G715 MP10 graphics unit and a maximum memory bandwidth of 27 GB/s. In terms of performance, the Google Tensor G3 shows clear superiority over the Google Tensor.

Both in single-core and multi-core performance, the Google Tensor G3 delivers an increase of over 10 percent. This makes it a better choice for demanding applications and gaming, thanks to its Immortalis graphics, even though its stated memory bandwidth is lower. The 4 nm manufacturing process of the Google Tensor G3 contributes to higher energy efficiency, which positively impacts battery life and thermal performance.

As these are integrated mobile chips, separate market prices are not relevant. The Google Tensor G3 can be found in newer, higher-priced devices, while the Google Tensor is installed in older, often more affordable models. For maximum performance and advanced AI functions, the Google Tensor G3 is recommended; for budget-conscious users, the Google Tensor remains a viable option.
