Apple A8 vs Apple A16 Bionic

Last updated:
The Apple A8, introduced in 2014, targeted mainstream smartphones of its time. The Apple A16 Bionic, unveiled in 2022, is designed for high-end smartphones, offering peak performance for demanding applications.

The Apple A8 is manufactured using a 20 nm process and features a dual-core CPU with 1 MB L2 and 4 MB L3 cache. The Apple A16 Bionic uses a 4 nm process, integrating a hexa-core CPU (two performance cores, four efficiency cores) with 20 MB L2 and 24 MB L3 cache. The Apple A16 Bionic surpasses the Apple A8 in single-core performance by a significant margin.

Multi-core performance is also significantly higher, due to architecture and core count. The performance differences are clear. For gaming, the Apple A16 Bionic is clearly superior. Its integrated graphics unit (Apple A16 with 5 GPU Cores) and 51 GB/s memory bandwidth (compared to 13 GB/s of the Apple A8) enable a fluid experience.

The Apple A8 is of limited suitability for modern games. Thanks to the 4 nm manufacturing process, the Apple A16 Bionic is more energy-efficient per processing unit. It achieves higher performance with comparable energy consumption than the Apple A8 (20 nm). Both CPUs are energy-optimized for mobile use.

Both processors are permanently integrated into mobile devices. The Apple A8 is found in older, more affordable devices for basic use. The Apple A16 Bionic is built into current premium smartphones and justifies the higher device price with peak performance. The Apple A8 is suitable for basic tasks and older apps in the budget-conscious segment.

The Apple A16 Bionic is recommended for highest performance in demanding applications, multitasking, and gaming.
