Apple A12X Bionic vs Apple A12 Bionic

Last updated:
The Apple A12X Bionic, introduced in late 2018, was primarily designed for demanding tasks in premium tablets such as the iPad Pro models.

It targets professional users and creatives. The Apple A12 Bionic, also introduced in late 2018, was mainly used in iPhones and standard iPads.

It is optimized for general smartphone and tablet use as well as everyday applications. Both processors are manufactured by Apple using the advanced 7nm fabrication process. The Apple A12 Bionic features a hexa-core CPU architecture with two high-performance cores and four efficiency cores, complemented by a 4-core GPU.

The Apple A12X Bionic, on the other hand, offers an octa-core CPU with four high-performance cores and four efficiency cores, paired with a more powerful 7-core GPU. The Apple A12X Bionic also has a higher maximum memory bandwidth of 68 GB/s compared to 34 GB/s for the Apple A12 Bionic.

Both feature 8 MB of Level-2 cache. In terms of single-core performance, both processors offer a solid foundation, with the Apple A12X Bionic delivering noticeably higher performance in some scenarios. For multi-core performance, the Apple A12X Bionic shows a significant advantage.

Its higher core count, especially for the high-performance cores, allows for much better handling of parallel tasks and complex workloads compared to the Apple A12 Bionic. For gaming scenarios, the Apple A12X Bionic offers superior performance. Its more powerful 7-core GPU and higher memory bandwidth enable smoother frame rates and the rendering of more complex graphics, which is particularly noticeable in demanding titles or higher resolutions.

While the Apple A12 Bionic is well suited for most mobile games, it does not achieve the same level of graphical detail and fluid performance as the Apple A12X Bionic. The Apple A12X Bionic has higher power consumption under full load, due to its larger number of CPU and GPU cores.

This leads to a higher effective thermal design power (TDP) and consequently requires more robust cooling solutions, typically found in larger devices. The Apple A12 Bionic is designed to be more energy-efficient, with lower power consumption and TDP, making it ideal for devices with limited space and a focus on long battery life.

Since these are System-on-a-Chip solutions firmly integrated into Apple devices, they are not traded as individual components. Devices with the Apple A12X Bionic, such as older iPad Pro models, were typically positioned in the premium segment and offered corresponding performance for their price. Devices with the Apple A12 Bionic, such as older iPhones or standard iPads, were more accessible in price and offered balanced performance for everyday use, representing good value for money for the mass market.

The Apple A12X Bionic impresses with its superior multi-core and graphics performance, making it ideal for professional applications, demanding creative work, and high-end gaming. It is recommended for users who need maximum mobile computing power. The Apple A12 Bionic offers very good all-round performance and high energy efficiency.

It is the right choice for users looking for a balanced system for everyday tasks, productivity, and casual gaming in an energy-efficient format.
