Intel Xeon E3
Actual generation: 6.
Actual architecture: Kaby Lake S
Technology: 14 nm
Intel Xeon E3 are the business derivative of the Intel Core i series with deactivated integrated graphics (there are few Intel Xeon E3 processors with Intel graphics, these end with a
5 in the article designation). Processors from the Intel Xeon E3 family form the entry point to the professional processors from Intel. These are only used in 1-socket systems and are relatively inexpensive.
In some cases it can also make sense for private use to buy an Intel Xeon E3 v3 instead of an Intel Core i processor, because the sockets (LGA 1150) are compatible and the price is somewhat cheaper due to the missing graphics unit. However, Intel Xeon processors cannot be overclocked.
Since Intel has disabled ECC memory correction in most consumer processors, many NAS systems or servers are based on Intel Xeon processors. ECC is an important part of data integrity in servers. In addition, Intel Xeon processors support Intel's V-Pro platform, in which several useful tools and interfaces for the business environment have been collected. For example, remote access can be implemented using Intel Active Management technology without additional software. The Intel Management Engine is used for this, via which access etc. is set up or set.
The Intel Xeon processors usually connect one or more Intel network interfaces to the system. Remote access via Intel Active Management Technology is only possible if the system has an Intel network card, an Intel iGPU and a vPro-capable Intel processor. AMD processors are therefore not supported by the vPro platform, nor are network cards from other manufacturers (e.g. Realtek). Therefore, when buying a server system, you should make sure that if possible all components come directly from Intel.
