The Intel Core i7 series contains fast processors that are also suitable for more demanding applications and games. Since 2017, Intel has also been offering the Intel Core i9 series for enthusiasts, which usually have even more CPU cores and higher clock frequencies than Intel's Core i7 processors. However, the Intel Core i7 processors are already fast enough for the vast majority of users.

The Intel Core i7 processors are available for desktop use as well as for use as a mobile processor (e.g. in a notebook). The processors range from the smaller U variants (15 watt TDP) to the strong desktop versions with a real consumption of around 250 watts (Intel Core i7-13700K). The modern Intel Core i7 processors support up to 128 GB of RAM in two memory channels (dual channel), which can be connected in up to four RAM modules.

Processor variants marked with a K or KF have a free multiplier and can be overclocked. In addition, since 2019 there have also been the F variants, which come without an internal graphics card and are therefore reduced in price. Since many high-end computers have a dedicated graphics card anyway and therefore do not need the internal graphics card of the processor, it can be worth buying an F variant. However, the integrated graphics unit can also be used for video playback, e.g. on YouTube or Netflix. During this time, the dedicated graphics card can then be put into standby to save energy. The current Intel iGPUs support the vast majority of video codecs.

With the Alder Lake processors, Intel switched to processors with a hybrid core structure at the end of 2021. Before that, all CPU cores were the same size and therefore also very limited in number. With the change to the hybrid core structure, Intel now accommodates 16 CPU cores, for example in the Intel Core i7-13700K, which consist of 8 fast P cores (Raptor Cove) as well as Assemble another 8 E cores (Gracemont).

The E cores are based on a further development of Intel's Atom cores. They are smaller than the P cores, but much more efficient. They take care of background tasks, for example, but can also work in parallel with the P cores on larger computing tasks.
