Apple A9X vs Apple A16 Bionic (5-CPU 4-GPU)

Last updated:
The Apple A9X was introduced in 2015 and was primarily designed for the first iPad Pro. Its architecture bears the codename A9.

This processor was manufactured using the 16 nm fabrication process and features an integrated graphics unit called Apple A9X. Single-core performance is sufficient for everyday tasks and running basic applications. Multi-core performance also offers an acceptable basis for using standard apps.

In gaming scenarios, the integrated Apple A9X graphics allow for the playback of older or less graphically demanding games. The maximum memory bandwidth is 51 GB/s. Due to the 16 nm process, energy efficiency is lower compared to newer generations. As a component of older devices, the Apple A9X can today be found in a more affordable price segment, making it cost-efficient for basic requirements.

The Apple A16 Bionic, introduced in 2022, is primarily found in current high-end iPhones and some iPads. Its architecture bears the codename A16. It is produced using the state-of-the-art 4 nm manufacturing process. This processor is equipped with a 5-CPU configuration, consisting of two performance and three efficiency cores, as well as a 4-GPU graphics unit (Apple A16 (4 GPU Cores)).

It features a 20 MB Level 2 cache and a 24 MB Level 3 cache. Single-core and multi-core performance is significantly higher compared to the A9X, enabling very fast and responsive application execution and demanding multitasking. For gaming scenarios, the integrated Apple A16 graphics (4 GPU Cores) offer peak performance that smoothly renders even graphically demanding games.

The maximum memory bandwidth is also 51 GB/s. Thanks to the 4 nm manufacturing process, the Apple A16 Bionic is characterized by excellent energy efficiency. It is built into premium devices, where it delivers superior performance.
