Apple A4 vs Apple A17 Pro

Last updated:
Introduced in 2010, the Apple A4 was Apple's first self-developed processor for the original iPad and iPhone 4.

The Apple A17 Pro, on the other hand, is Apple's current high-end chip, launched in 2023 and specifically designed for the iPhone 15 Pro models.

The Apple A4 was manufactured using a 45 nm process and featured a single core. The Apple A17 Pro utilizes the cutting-edge 3 nm process and integrates a 6-core CPU with two performance cores and four efficiency cores, representing a fundamental technological leap.

At the time, the Apple A4 offered acceptable single-core performance. The Apple A17 Pro significantly surpasses the A4 in both single and multi-core performance, optimized for the most demanding applications and complex multitasking. With its PowerVR SGX535 GPU, the Apple A4 only supported simple mobile games of its time.

The Apple A17 Pro, however, integrates a powerful 6-core GPU, enabling AAA games with high frame rates and ray tracing. Its high maximum memory bandwidth of 51 GB/s supports these superior graphics capabilities. The Apple A4 was known for its low power consumption, optimized for the battery life of mobile devices of its era.

The Apple A17 Pro, while offering significantly higher performance, provides excellent energy efficiency thanks to the 3 nm process and intelligent core architecture, with superior performance per watt. Both processors are tightly integrated into Apple devices and are not available separately. The Apple A4 is found in outdated devices, while the Apple A17 Pro is built into current premium smartphones.

The price-performance ratio must therefore always be considered in the context of the overall device. The Apple A4 was a pioneer for basic mobile use and energy efficiency of its time. The Apple A17 Pro, however, offers outstanding performance and efficiency for all modern, demanding applications and gaming.

For today's requirements, the Apple A17 Pro is the only sensible choice.
