Apple A13 Bionic vs Apple A9X

Last updated:
The Apple A13 Bionic, introduced in 2019, is an advanced processor for high-performance smartphones and certain tablets, optimized for demanding mobile applications.

It is manufactured using a 7 nm process and features a 6-core CPU configuration with two high-performance and four high-efficiency cores (Lightning / Thunder), complemented by 8 MB of Level 2 cache. The Apple A9X, introduced in 2015, targeted powerful tablets.

It is based on a 16 nm manufacturing process and is typically a dual-core CPU design with 3 MB of Level 2 cache and 4 MB of Level 3 cache. In terms of performance, the Apple A13 Bionic offers significantly higher single-core and multi-core performance than the Apple A9X, leading to noticeably better responsiveness and faster processing.

The Apple A13 Bionic is also clearly superior in gaming scenarios. Its integrated Apple A13 graphics unit and superior CPU performance enable smoother frame rates and the display of more complex graphics in modern games, while the Apple A9X reaches its limits with current titles. Despite the Apple A9X's higher maximum memory bandwidth of 51 GB/s compared to the Apple A13 Bionic's 34 GB/s, the architectural advancements and the stronger GPU of the Apple A13 Bionic outweigh this for gaming performance.

The Apple A13 Bionic benefits from its 7 nm manufacturing process through improved energy efficiency, which allows for higher performance with lower power consumption. The Apple A9X is less efficient due to its 16 nm process. Both processors are integrated mobile chips and are not available separately.

Devices with the Apple A13 Bionic offer substantially higher performance but are more expensive. Older devices with the Apple A9X are significantly cheaper on the used market and offer good value for money for basic tasks.
