Apple A10X Fusion vs Apple A15 Bionic (5-GPU)

Last updated:
The Apple A10X Fusion was introduced in mid-2017 and was primarily used in the iPad Pro models of that time.

It was aimed at professional users who needed high performance for demanding tablet applications and creative tasks. The Apple A15 Bionic (5-GPU) was introduced at the end of 2021 and can be found in devices such as the iPhone 13 series, the iPhone 14 (non-Pro), and the iPad mini 6.

Its target audience is users who expect the highest mobile performance for gaming, augmented reality, and demanding productivity apps. The Apple A10X Fusion is manufactured using a 10 nm fabrication process and features six CPU cores, divided into three high-performance cores and three efficiency cores.

It has 8 MB of Level 2 cache and a maximum memory bandwidth of 51 GB/s. The Apple A15 Bionic (5-GPU) is manufactured using a more advanced 5 nm process and also includes six CPU cores, consisting of two high-performance cores and four efficiency cores. This processor features 16 MB of Level 2 cache, 32 MB of Level 3 cache, and a maximum memory bandwidth of 34 GB/s.

The Apple A15 Bionic (5-GPU) significantly outperforms the Apple A10X Fusion in single-core and multi-core computing performance. This results in noticeably more responsive operation and faster execution of complex applications on devices with the Apple A15 Bionic (5-GPU). At the time of its introduction, the Apple A10X Fusion offered solid performance for the requirements of its era.

For gaming scenarios, the Apple A15 Bionic (5-GPU) offers significantly better performance. Its newer architecture and the explicitly mentioned integrated graphics unit Apple A15 (5 GPU Cores) enable smoother frame rates and higher graphics quality in current and demanding games. The integrated graphics of the Apple A10X Fusion, called Apple A10X, was powerful at the time but cannot keep up with the newer generation.

The Apple A15 Bionic (5-GPU) benefits from its more advanced 5 nm fabrication process, leading to superior energy efficiency. This means that it consumes less energy for comparable performance or achieves higher performance for the same energy, which positively impacts battery life. The Apple A10X Fusion is less efficient in this regard.

These mobile processors are not sold individually. The price-performance ratio must be considered in the context of the end devices. Devices with the Apple A15 Bionic (5-GPU) are more current and generally higher-priced but also offer significantly higher performance. Used devices with the Apple A10X Fusion are usually cheaper to find and offer good value for money for less demanding tasks or entry-level use.

The Apple A10X Fusion is a solid choice for users looking for an older, more affordable tablet for basic and moderate tasks. It offers good performance for its generation and high memory bandwidth. The Apple A15 Bionic (5-GPU) is the clear recommendation for users who need maximum performance, superior graphics performance, and energy efficiency for demanding mobile applications, gaming, and a longer lifespan.
