La serie Intel Celeron si basa principalmente sull'architettura Intel Core i. A differenza dei processori più costosi della serie Intel Core i, i processori Intel Celeron hanno meno core CPU e né modalità turbo né hyperthreading. Alcuni processori Intel Celeron si basano anche sull'architettura Intel Atom, che di solito è un po' più lenta ma anche più economica. Poiché la potenza in uscita qui può essere molto bassa, questi processori possono essere raffreddati parzialmente in modo passivo, il che consente la costruzione di un computer silenzioso.

I processori Intel Celeron sono molto economici (a partire da 35 euro per un processore desktop) e offrono un ottimo rapporto qualità-prezzo. I processori sono un po' più lenti dei processori Intel Pentium, che hanno un prezzo compreso tra l'Intel Celeron e la serie Intel Core i. I processori Intel Celeron sono progettati per il lavoro d'ufficio medio, la navigazione sul Web e il controllo della posta elettronica. Inoltre, i sistemi NAS autocostruiti (o i sistemi prefabbricati) possono anche essere dotati di un processore Intel Celeron. Le prestazioni sono sufficienti anche per implementare connessioni di rete a 10 Gbit più veloci. Tuttavia, i sistemi NAS più costosi si basano su processori Intel Pentium o Intel Xeon, poiché questi portano con sé la possibilità di virtualizzazione.

I processori non provengono sempre dall'architettura Intel Core, ma possono anche essere basati sui processori Intel Atom più lenti. Si consiglia quindi di verificare preventivamente le prestazioni del processore. La maggior parte dei processori Intel Celeron sono molto economici e le varianti ultra-mobili (contrassegnate da una U nel nome) sono utilizzate anche nei Chromebook, ad esempio l'HP Chromebook 14. Tuttavia, i processori non vengono utilizzati nei normali ultrabook o notebook nel segmento di prezzo più elevato.I produttori di solito utilizzano processori della serie Intel Core i5 e Intel Core i7.
