Description of the processor

The Intel Core i5-6400 was released in the third quarter of 2015 and is part of the sixth generation of the Intel Core i5 family. The processor is manufactured with a structure width of 14 nanometers, in a monolithic chip design and is based on Intels Skylake S architecture. The Level 3 cache of the Intel Core i5-6400 is 6.00 megabytes and requires a mainboard equipped with the LGA 1151 socket.

The Intel Core i5-6400 is a quad-core processor, so it has 4 physical cores. Hyperthreading technology is not supported by the processor and a free multiplier that would allow the processor to be overclocked is also missing. The base clock frequency of the processor cores is 2.70 gigahertz and the maximum turbo clock is 3.30 gigahertz. However, this maximum clock rate is only achieved when a single core is fully utilized. If all cores are fully utilized at the same time, the maximum clock rate is still 3.00 gigahertz.

The processor can be operated with a dedicated graphics card; 16 PCIe lanes in version 3.0 are available, which enable a maximum bandwidth of 15.8 GB/s. The Intel Core i5-6400 is also equipped with an internal graphics unit. The in-house Intel HD Graphics 530 is used here. This graphics unit is equipped with 24 execution units and 192 shaders. The base clock of the iGPU is 350 megahertz and the maximum dynamic clock (turbo clock) is up to 1.15 gigahertz. The graphics unit is also manufactured using the 14 nanometer process and is able to supply up to 3 monitors with one image. The RAM built into the system serves as graphics memory, of which the graphics unit can access up to 32 gigabytes.

The processor itself is equipped with 2 memory channels and can be operated with up to 64 gigabytes of DDR3-1600 or DDR4-2133 RAM.
