Description of the processor

The AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX is an 8-core mobile processor from AMD. Using SMT, it can process up to 16 threads simultaneously. Its clock frequency is 3.3 GHz in the base. The processor can increase this to 4.2 GHz or even 4.6 GHz when using only one CPU core. This results in good benchmark values. The Zen 3 CPU technology has a 15 to 20 percent higher raw performance per clock than the previous architecture.

An AMD Radeon 8 Graphics (Renoir) is used as the internal graphics (iGPU). This has 8 execution units and 512 shaders. The graphics frequency is up to 1.9 GHz, which results in a maximum raw FP32 performance of almost 2 TFLOPS.

The AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX is based on AMDs Cezanne APU design, which combines Zen 3 CPU cores with an AMD Radeon Vega. The "normal" Ryzen desktop processors do not have an iGPU. With 16 MB level 3 cache, the AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX is equipped with twice as much cache compared to the previous generation "Renoir".

The AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX can connect up to 64 GB DDR4-3200 / LPDDR4-4266 in a maximum of two memory channels. Since the graphics card also benefits from this, as part of the main memory is used as graphics memory, it is advisable to use the fastest possible main memory in 2 memory channels (dual-channel mode).

The AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX has a TDP of 45 watts, but can be configured to 54 watts in order to provide its performance stably over a longer period of time. However, this requires a good cooling solution for the notebook. By using the 7 nm TSMC production, the processor is still sufficiently efficient despite the high clock frequencies. As a socket, AMD uses the "FP6", in which the processor is soldered to the notebooks mainboard.
