News and articles for the AMD Ryzen 5 5500U

Description of the processor

The AMD Ryzen 5 5500U is a 6-core mobile processor from AMD. It supports SMT (Simultaneous Multi Threading) and can process 12 threads at the same time. The processor clocks its CPU cores with up to 2.1 GHz in the base. It can increase its clock frequency to up to 3.4 GHz (load on several CPU cores) or even up to 4.0 GHz (single core operation) via the turbo mode.

The AMD Radeon 7 Graphics (Renoir) is used as the internal graphics unit (iGPU). With 7 execution units and 448 shaders, the graphics are suitable for one or two games in FullHD (1080p) resolution. The FP32 computing power is around 1.6 TFLOPS.

With a TDP of 15 watts, the AMD Ryzen 5 5500U is in the normal range for a mobile processor. The system manufacturer can operate the processor in a TDP range between 10 and 25 watts, whereby operation with 25 watts results in a significant increase in performance if the processor is loaded over a longer period of time.

Up to 32 GB DDR4-3200 RAM is supported in two memory channels. The dual-channel mode doubles the theoretical memory bandwidth of the system and is therefore also very beneficial for the internal graphics, as this uses part of the main memory as graphics memory. 8 MB are available as level 3 cache.

The AMD Ryzen 5 5500U was presented in the 1st quarter of 2021 together with many other mobile processors with the name Ryzen 5xxxU. The AMD Ryzen 5 5500U is still based on the older "Lucienne" design, which is still based on Zen 2 cores. Other Ryzen 5xxxU mobile processors are already based on the new AMD "Cezanne" design with Zen 3 cores and have a significantly higher performance. We do not know why AMD uses two different designs in a generation with the same name.
