Description of the processor

With the AMD Ryzen 5 4500U, AMD has a 6-core processor (6 threads) mobile processor in its portfolio, which can clock its 6 cores with up to 3.8 GHz (2.3 GHz base clock). The processor can clock one core to 4.0 GHz during single-core load. Hyper-Threading for virtually doubling the CPU cores is not supported by the AMD Ryzen 5 4500U. The CPU has an 8 megabyte level 3 cache.

In the Renoir APU, AMD combines the 6 Zen 2 CPU cores with the AMD Radeon 6 Graphics (iGPU). Both the CPU and the iGPU are manufactured in the current 7 nm structure, which enables good energy efficiency and high clock rates. The speed gains of the iGPU are almost exclusively due to the significantly increased clock rate. Execution standards and thus the number of shaders have not changed.

The AMD Ryzen 5 4500U supports DDR4-3200 RAM (or LPDDR4-4266) in dual-channel mode (from two modules). The dual-channel mode doubles the memory bandwidth, which not only benefits the CPU but also the iGPU. The iGPU uses part of the main memory as graphics memory. Since the bandwidth of the memory has a great influence on the raw performance of the iGPU in graphic calculations, it is advisable to pay attention to a notebook with fast main memory and two modules if possible. A total of up to 32 GB of RAM is supported.

The AMD Ryzen 5 4500U is classified with 15 watts TDP, but can also be configured to 25 watts TDP. The configuration depends on the manufacturer or on the cooling solution of the notebook. The processor is compatible with the FP6 socket and is soldered to the mainboard. A later exchange is not possible. The Renoir APUs were introduced by AMD in Q1 2020.
