Raspberry Pi 4 B (Broadcom BCM2711) vs AMD E-350

Last updated:
The AMD E-350 is based on the Zacate architecture with Bobcat cores and was manufactured using a 32-nm process.

It was originally aimed at affordable notebooks and small computers. With two cores and two threads, this processor offers basic computing capacity for simple office applications. In synthetic tests such as Cinebench R23, the AMD E-350 shows significantly lower single-core performance compared to its competitor.

The integrated AMD Radeon HD 6310 graphics unit allows for the display of user interfaces and older multimedia content but quickly reaches its functional limits with games. Since the memory bandwidth is 9 GB/s, graphical performance remains limited for demanding 3D scenarios. The thermal design power is in the low double-digit range, which often requires active cooling.

The system can be found cheaply on the used market as part of older hardware. It is primarily suitable for simple server services. The Broadcom BCM2711 powers the Raspberry Pi 4 B and uses the Cortex-A72 architecture. Manufactured in a 28-nm process, this processor has four computing cores. It was developed for hobbyists, educational purposes, and compact industrial applications.

In single-core performance benchmarks such as Cinebench R23, the Broadcom BCM2711 measurably outperforms the AMD E-350, suggesting a more efficient architecture. Graphical tasks are handled by the Broadcom VideoCore VI unit, which is optimized for multimedia playback and simple emulations.

Due to the architecture, the selection of games is limited to specific operating systems such as Linux distributions. With a memory bandwidth of 13 GB/s and very low power consumption, the Broadcom BCM2711 is ideally suited for energy-efficient continuous operation. The market price for the overall system is mostly stable, leading to a good ratio of cost and performance.

It is particularly recommended for IoT projects.
