Description of the processor

The Intel Pentium Gold 6405U, released in the fourth quarter of 2019, is a processor from the Intel Pentium series that is based on the Comet Lake architecture and is thus manufactured using the 14 nanometer process.

The Intel Pentium Gold 6405U, which is equipped with a 2 megabyte cache, is only installed firmly soldered to the BGA 1528 socket. It is mostly used in entry-level notebooks such as the Lenovo IdeaPad 3 or the HP Chromebook x360.

The Intel Pentium Gold 6405U has 2 physical cores and 4 threads, so it supports hyperthreading technology. The cores have a base clock frequency of 2.40 gigahertz and have no turbo mode. The TDP of a low 15 watts can be reduced by the device manufacturers to 12.5 watts, which means that a little power is lost.

In terms of RAM, the Intel Pentium Gold 6405U supports a maximum of 64 gigabytes and modules of the DDR4 type with up to 2400 megahertz or of the LPDDR3 type with a maximum of 2133 megahertz. The processor does not support working memory with automatic error correction (ECC memory).

The graphics unit integrated in the processor (Intel UHD Graphics 610) comes from generation 9.5 from Intels GPU program and was released two years before the processor, in the fourth quarter of 2017. The basic clock frequency of the graphics unit is 300 megahertz and the maximum dynamic clock frequency is 950 megahertz. The maximum size of the video memory is 32 gigabytes and image output is supported on up to 3 screens in parallel in full 4K resolution at 60Hz.

PCI-Express is only available in version 2.0, which means that fast M.2 SSD hard drives and newer expansion cards, such as a dedicated graphics card, have to be dispensed with. However, since Intel designed the processor for entry-level devices, the lack of PCI-Express 3.0 is bearable.
