Description of the processor

The AMD Athlon Gold 3150U is an affordable mobile processor from AMD that has two CPU cores. It supports SMT (Hyper-Threading) and can therefore process up to 4 threads at the same time. The base frequency of the processor is 2.4 GHz. The processor can increase its clock frequency up to 3.3 GHz under single-core load. In multi-core mode, the AMD Athlon Gold 3150U can only address its two CPU cores at the base rate.

Although the AMD Athlon Gold 3150U was introduced in 2020, the processor is not yet manufactured using the modern 7 nm manufacturing process at TSMC. Instead, the processor comes from Globalfoundries, where it is manufactured using the old 14 nm process. It is still based on the Zen + CPU cores (Ryzen 2xxx). In addition, the processor has an AMD Radeon Vega 3 Graphics and therefore does not necessarily need a dedicated graphics card.

The AMD Athlon Gold 3150U has a 4 MB level 3 cache. 32 GB RAM of the type DDR4-2400 in dual-channel mode are supported. Since the iGPU benefits from fast RAM, it should be used in dual-channel mode. At least two main memory modules are required for this. You should also make sure that you use the fastest possible memory.

The TDP of the processor is 15 watts, but the processor can also be operated with 12 or up to 25 watts. Above all, the processors multi-core performance benefits from a high TDP. To do this, the notebook must be able to cool the processor sufficiently, as the waste heat from the processor increases significantly at a TDP of 25 watts. The processor has 8 PCIe 3.0 lines that can be used to connect devices such as a fast SSD to the CPU. The processor is soldered to the notebooks mainboard in the FP5 socket and cannot be replaced.
