In September, both AMD and Intel are introducing their new mainstream desktop processors. It doesn't seem to have been as close as this year for a long time, leaked benchmarks of the new top models from AMD and Intel point to a head-to-head race.

This year even the 6 GHz clock limit is almost within reach. With a good cooler and some overclocking it should be possible to reach the 6 GHz limit. But even in series production, the manufacturers try to realize the highest possible clock frequency, at least on one core.

Last week we already reported on the new Intel Core i7-13700K processor from Intel, which is expected in autumn 2022. With 8+8 CPU cores (24 threads), the Intel Core i7-13700K should have the same configuration as last year's Intel Core i9-12900K. With this, Intel wants to finally clear AMD's lead in multi-core performance, which has existed for several years.

According to an internal Intel slide published at the end of last year, the Intel Core i7-13700K could have 8+8, i.e. 16 CPU cores that provide 24 threads. The interesting thing about the slide is that it was recently confirmed by newer leaks of the Intel Core i9-13900K and the Intel Core i5-13600K as the number of cores and also the size of the cache matches with recently published CPU-Z screenshots of alleged development models.

Intels 13th generation of the Intel Core i series (Raptor Lake) is about to be released and a lot of information is already known from the official side. This information includes e.g. the number of CPU cores, the expected increase in performance and the manufacturing technology of the new CPUs.

We compare the technical data of the Intel Core i9-13900 with its predecessor and look at benchmarks that have already been published.

Comparison of the two processors

The Intel Core i9-12900K comes from the twelfth generation of the Intel Core i9 family and is based on the Alder Lake S architecture. It was launched in the fourth quarter of 2021 and in this comparison we look at how it compares to the Intel Core i7-13700K, which was launched in the fourth quarter of 2022 and is therefore a year younger. The latter comes from the thirteenth generation of Intel's Core i7 family, which is based on the Raptor Lake S architecture.

Both processors have a direct predecessor and a successor, with the Intel Core i9-12900K these are the Intel Core i9-11900K (predecessor) and the Intel Core i9-13900K (successor) and with the Intel Core i7-13700K the Intel Core i7-12700K (predecessor) and the Intel Core i7-14700K (successor).

Both processors are based on a hybrid big.LITTLE core architecture. The Intel Core i9-12900K has 8 Golden Cove performance cores and 8 Gracemont efficiency cores. The performance cores clock at up to 5.20 gigahertz and the efficiency cores at up to 3.90 gigahertz. The Intel Core i7-13700K is also equipped with 8 performance cores and 8 efficiency cores. The performance cores are of the newer Raptor Cove type and clock at up to 5.40, while the efficiency cores are identical, but clock slightly higher at up to 4.20.

Depending on the benchmark, the performance of the Intel Core i9-12900K is around 5-10 percent lower than that of the Intel Core i7-13700K. The thermal design power of 125 watts is identical for both.

The Intel UHD Graphics 770 is used as the internal graphics unit in both processors. This is equipped with 32 execution units and 256 shaders. The only small difference is that the graphics unit in the Intel Core i9-12900K clocks at a maximum of 1.55 gigahertz, while the maximum clock speed in the Intel Core i7-13700K is 1.60 gigahertz.

The Intel Core i9-12900K can be operated with up to 128 gigabytes of RAM, whereas the Intel Core i7-13700K can even be operated with up to 192 gigabytes.
