In September, both AMD and Intel are introducing their new mainstream desktop processors. It doesn't seem to have been as close as this year for a long time, leaked benchmarks of the new top models from AMD and Intel point to a head-to-head race.

This year even the 6 GHz clock limit is almost within reach. With a good cooler and some overclocking it should be possible to reach the 6 GHz limit. But even in series production, the manufacturers try to realize the highest possible clock frequency, at least on one core.

Last week we already reported on the new Intel Core i7-13700K processor from Intel, which is expected in autumn 2022. With 8+8 CPU cores (24 threads), the Intel Core i7-13700K should have the same configuration as last year's Intel Core i9-12900K. With this, Intel wants to finally clear AMD's lead in multi-core performance, which has existed for several years.

According to an internal Intel slide published at the end of last year, the Intel Core i7-13700K could have 8+8, i.e. 16 CPU cores that provide 24 threads. The interesting thing about the slide is that it was recently confirmed by newer leaks of the Intel Core i9-13900K and the Intel Core i5-13600K as the number of cores and also the size of the cache matches with recently published CPU-Z screenshots of alleged development models.

Comparison of the two processors

You can already guess from the very similar names of the Intel processors Intel Core i7-13700 and Intel Core i7-13700K that the differences between these two processors are marginal. Let's start with some general data about the two processors, the Intel Core i7-13700 was launched by Intel in the first quarter of 2023, whereas the Intel Core i7-13700K was released a quarter earlier, in the fourth quarter of 2022 became. The processors are manufactured with a structure width of 10 nanometers and come from the 13th generation of Intel Core i7 processors. They are based on the Raptor Lake S architecture and can be used on all motherboards with the LGA 1700 socket.

Both processors have 16 processor cores, which are divided into 8 Raptor Cove performance cores and 8 Gracemont efficiency cores in a hybrid big-LITTLE core architecture. The performance cores of the Intel Core i7-13700 clock at up to 5.20 gigahertz and the efficiency cores at up to 4.10 gigahertz. The performance cores of the Intel Core i7-13700K, on the other hand, have a slightly higher clock speed of up to 5.40 gigahertz and the efficiency cores also have a slightly higher clock speed of up to 4.20 gigahertz. Hyperthreading is only supported by the performance cores of both processors, meaning that up to 24 computing threads are available to both processors. The Intel Core i7-13700K has a unique selling point compared to the Intel Core i7-13700, because only the K processor has a free multiplier and can be overclocked.

Both processors are equipped with an identical internal graphics unit; the Intel UHD Graphics 770 is used here, which has 32 execution units and clocks at up to 1.60 gigahertz.

There is no difference between the processors when it comes to supported RAM, only there is a big difference in the power consumption. The Intel Core i7-13700 is specified with a TDP of 65 watts, whereas the Intel Core i7-13700K is rated significantly higher at 125 watts.
