Intel Core i5-6600 vs Intel Core i5-7600

Last updated:
The Intel Core i5-6600, based on the Skylake S architecture, was manufactured by Intel in 2015 using a 14-nm process and was aimed at mainstream desktop users.

It features 4 cores, 4 threads, and 6 MB of Level 3 cache. The integrated graphics unit is the Intel HD Graphics 530. With a maximum memory bandwidth of 34 GB/s and PCIe Version 3.0, it offered a solid foundation. Its performance in single-core and multi-core scenarios differs only insignificantly (under 10 percent) from its successor.

Sufficient for gaming in its time, it now offers basic computing power. The thermal design power (TDP) is 65 watts. It is mainly found on the used market. The Intel Core i5-7600, part of the Kaby Lake S architecture, was launched in 2017 and was also manufactured by Intel using a 14-nm process.

As its successor, it also targeted the mainstream desktop market. It has 4 cores, 4 threads, and 6 MB of Level 3 cache. The integrated graphics unit was improved to the Intel HD Graphics 630, and the maximum memory bandwidth was increased to 38 GB/s. It also supports PCIe Version 3.0. Architectural refinements and slightly higher clock speeds lead to a minimal performance increase, which is less than 10 percent in benchmarks compared to the Intel Core i5-6600.

This translates into marginally better gaming performance. Its TDP is also 65 watts. On the used market, it is usually only slightly more expensive. Both quad-core processors are older models suitable for basic desktop applications and light gaming. The Intel Core i5-7600 offers marginal improvements in computing power and a slightly improved integrated graphics unit.

For a system upgrade with a small price difference, the Intel Core i5-7600 is the more advantageous choice. For new systems, both are no longer primarily recommended due to their age.
