Intel Core i5-6500 vs Intel Core i5-7400

Last updated:
The Intel Core i5-6500 was introduced by Intel as part of the Skylake S architecture. This desktop processor, manufactured using the 14nm process, targeted the mainstream market and offered a solid foundation for everyday computing tasks and light productivity.

It features four physical cores and four threads, allowing it to manage multiple tasks simultaneously. The integrated graphics solution, Intel HD Graphics 530, supports basic multimedia applications. With a maximum memory bandwidth of 34 GB/s and PCIe 3.0, it provides the necessary connectivity for typical desktop systems.

Its Level 3 cache is 6 MB, contributing to overall performance. The Intel Core i5-7400, based on the newer Kaby Lake S architecture, succeeded the Intel Core i5-6500 and was also manufactured by Intel using the 14nm process.

It is also designed for the mainstream desktop market, offering improved efficiency and slightly enhanced capabilities compared to its predecessor. This processor is also equipped with four cores and four threads. The integrated graphics unit, Intel HD Graphics 630, offers marginally improved media playback.

It also supports PCIe 3.0 and achieves a maximum memory bandwidth of 38 GB/s, representing a slight increase. The Level 3 cache is identical at 6 MB. When comparing single-core and multi-core performance, only minimal differences are observed between the Intel Core i5-6500 and the Intel Core i5-7400.

The newer Kaby Lake architecture of the Intel Core i5-7400 brought minor architectural improvements, which, however, barely translate into a raw performance increase exceeding 10 percent in synthetic benchmarks. Both processors are capable of smoothly handling everyday tasks such as browsing, word processing, and media consumption.

For gaming scenarios, both processors offer comparable performance when combined with a dedicated graphics card. The small differences in core architecture and clock speeds do not lead to a significant performance difference in most games. For serious gaming, a powerful separate graphics card is essential for both systems.

The integrated graphics units are primarily suitable for less demanding titles or for display output. Regarding power consumption and thermal design power (TDP), both processors are very similar. They belong to a generation that was already optimized for efficiency and typically have similar energy requirements.

This means they are well-suited for systems where moderate power consumption is desired, and the cooling solution does not need to be oversized. The price-performance ratio of both processors is primarily relevant in the used market today. As older models, they are no longer widely available new. Their performance makes them a cost-effective option for building or upgrading basic systems where the acquisition price plays a major role.

The Intel Core i5-7400 might have a minimally higher value due to its slightly newer architecture, but the practical difference is often negligible. In summary, the Intel Core i5-6500 represents a solid and proven option for mainstream applications. The Intel Core i5-7400 offers a minimal evolution thanks to its Kaby Lake architecture, which, however, is hardly noticeable in practice.

For most use cases that do not require absolute peak performance, both processors are equally well suited. The choice often depends on availability and price in the used market, as the performance differences are minimal.
