Description of the processor

The Intel Core i7-11700K is an 8-core desktop processor from Intel. It has a free multiplier, which enables the processor to be overclocked (indicated by the "K" at the end of the product name). The Intel Core i7-11700K clocks its 8 CPU cores with 3.4 GHz. However, it can dynamically adjust its clock frequency (turbo mode) and achieve a clock rate of up to 5.0 GHz when only one CPU core is loaded. A high 4.6 GHz is still possible when multiple cores are loaded.

An Intel Iris Xe Graphics 32 (Rocket Lake S) with 32 execution units, 256 shaders and a clock frequency of up to 1.35 GHz is used as the iGPU (internal graphics unit) in the Intel Core i7-11700K. Although this is the latest Intel graphics architecture, the iGPU is quite slow with a processing power of approx. 690 GFLOPs (FP32, single precision). It is therefore only suitable for older PC games at most. The reason for the poor iGPU performance lies in the processors backport. The architecture used in "Rocket Lake" was actually developed to a structure width of 10 nm, but then had to be ported back to 14 nm by Intel because Intels 10 nm production was not yet sufficiently expanded.

The backport reduces the possible number of cores as well as the clock frequencies of the CPU and GPU. The desktop processors also have a somewhat smaller level 3 cache. In the Intel Core i7-11700K, however, this is sufficiently large at 16 MB. Intel has also massively reduced the number of execution units in the iGPU. While the "Tiger Lake" mobile processors with a structure width of 10 nm can fall back on up to 96 execution units of the Intel Xe graphics, the "Rocket Lake" desktop processors run out of 32 execution units. Intel specifies the TDP of the Intel Core i7-11700K as 125 watts.
