Description of the processor

The Intel Core i7-1280P is based on Intels current Alder Lake architecture, which mixes CPU cores of different sizes for the first time. Intel distinguishes between the large performance cores of the Golden Cove architecture and the smaller Gracemont CPU cores that come from the Intel Atom lineup. The combination of CPU cores of different sizes saves energy, since only the CPU cores that are actually needed are active.

For example, the Intel Core i7-1280P can put its large performance cores to sleep when it is idle (Windows desktop), while the smaller and more efficient Gracemont CPU cores then take care of all the background tasks that arise.

The Intel Core i7-1280P has 14 CPU cores and can process 20 threads in parallel. The different sized CPU cores can also work in a common cluster. The TDP of the Intel Core i7-1280P is slightly higher at 28 watts, while the U variants are limited to 15 watts. The internal graphics unit, type Intel Iris Xe Graphics 96, also benefits from the higher TDP of the Intel Core i7-1280P, since it has to share the energy budget with the CPU part of the Intel Core i7-1280P.

The Intel Core i7-1280P has a speed advantage over the other 15 watt U variants from Alder Lake, especially when the CPU and GPU are required. The iGPU has a computing power of 2.2 TFLOP/s and is therefore fast enough for older games in medium details. A dedicated graphics unit is recommended for more modern games or playing in high resolutions.

The Intel Core i7-1280P supports DDR5 memory (DDR5-4800) and LPDDR5-5200 in two (DDR) to 4 (LPDDR) memory channels. External devices such as a graphics card can be connected to the system using PCIe 4.0 with a full 16 lines, with the processor having a total of 28 PCIe 4.0 lines.
