News and articles for the AMD Ryzen 7 2700X and the AMD Ryzen 7 3700X

Comparison of the two processors

As the direct successor to the AMD Ryzen 7 2700X, the AMD Ryzen 7 3700X is around 20 percent faster in both single-core and multi-core loads. AMD was able to significantly increase the IPC of the Zen 2 cores of the AMD Ryzen 3 3700X, while the clock frequencies have only changed slightly.

The AMD Ryzen 7 3700X now clocks one CPU core with up to 4.4 GHz (2700X: 4.3 GHz), several CPU cores are clocked at up to 4 GHz (2700X: 3.85 GHz). Both processors do not have an internal graphics unit (iGPU). The installation of a dedicated graphics card is therefore mandatory.

Both processors are intended for private use in the desktop area and have 8 CPU cores (16 threads). Both are suitable for overclocking and can be relatively easily accelerated by a further 5-10 percent (provided there is sufficient cooling). The level 3 cache of the processor has doubled from 16 to 32 MB. From benchmarks of various Renoir APUs (these are also based on Zen 2 CPU cores), however, we know that the size of the level 3 cache does not have a major impact on most applications or games.

The AMD Ryzen 7 3700X is already manufactured in a modern 7 nm process and is therefore relatively economical. The older AMD Ryzen 7 2700X still has a Zen + CPU core design, which is manufactured in 12 nm. For this reason, AMD was able to reduce the TDP of the AMD Ryzen 7 3700X from 105 watts to just 65 watts. Although the TDP does not represent the real energy requirement of the processor, the TDP gives a rough outlook on the efficiency of a processor.

If the AMD Ryzen 7 2700X still supports DDR4-2933 RAM, the 3700X now supports DDR4-3200. Memory support and stability have also improved significantly on the 3700X. Both CPUs have two memory channels, which double the bandwidth of the memory in dual-channel mode.
