V-Ray CPU-Render Benchmark

V-Ray is a 3D rendering software from the manufacturer Chaos for designers and artists. Unlike many other render engines, V-Ray is capable of so-called hybrid rendering, in which the CPU and GPU work together at the same time.

However, the CPU benchmark we used (CPU Render Mode) only uses the system's processor. The working memory used plays a major role in the V-Ray benchmark. For our benchmarks we use the fastest RAM standard approved by the manufacturer (without overclocking).

Due to the high compatibility of V-Ray (including Autodesk 3ds Max, Maya, Cinema 4D, SketchUp, Unreal Engine and Blender), it is a frequently used software. With V-Ray, for example, photorealistic images can be rendered that laypeople cannot distinguish from normal photos.

This comparison clarifies how the AMD Ryzen 5 5500U released in the first quarter of 20201 fares against the AMD Ryzen 7 4700U released a year earlier in the first quarter of 2020. The processors are both manufactured using the 7 nanometer process, but the AMD Ryzen 5 5500U is based on the improved "Zen 2" architecture with the code name "Lucienne", whereas the AMD Ryzen 7 4700U is still based on the "Zen 2" architecture with the code name "Renoir" based. As you can see from the “U” at the end of the processor designation, both processors are models for the mobile sector. So they are mostly used in notebooks.

The AMD Ryzen 5 5500U has 6 processor cores with a base clock frequency of 2.10 gigahertz and a maximum turbo clock frequency of 4.00 gigahertz. The AMD Ryzen 7 4700U has 8 cores, 2 cores more, has a base clock frequency of 2.00 gigahertz and the maximum turbo clock is 4.10 gigahertz. In addition, the AMD Ryzen 5 5500U has the advantage over the AMD Ryzen 7 4700U that it supports Hyper-Threading technology.

In our benchmarks, there are not too great differences in single core utilization; the processors here are roughly the same speed. In the multi-core benchmarks, the AMD Ryzen 5 5500U is then a bit faster due to the existing Hyper-Threading technology. The 2 additional cores don't help the AMD Ryzen 7 4700U either.

The internal graphics unit AMD Radeon 7 Graphics (Renoir) is used in both processors. This iGPU has 7 execution units with 448 shaders and is manufactured using the 7 nanometer process. In the AMD Ryzen 5 5500U, however, the graphics unit clocks at up to 1.80 gigahertz, whereas in the AMD Ryzen 7 4700U the maximum is reached at 1.60 gigahertz. This clock rate gives the iGPU in the AMD Ryzen 5 5500U an 11% higher FP32 computing power.
