The Intel Core i5 processors form the golden middle of the Intel Core i series and are located under the Intel Core i7/i9 processors. The Intel Core i5 processors have fewer CPU cores than their more powerful family members.

Older Intel Core i5 desktop processors offer at least 4 CPU cores, current models from the 12th generation (Alder Lake S) rely on a hybrid core structure, which e.g. consists of 6 Intel Core i5-12600K b]P cores (Golden Cove) and 4 smaller and more efficient E cores (Gracemont). In the third quarter of 2022, Intel introduced the latest 13th generation of Intel Core i5 processors. The Intel Core i5-13600K relies again on 6 strong Raptor Cove P-cores, which now have 8 Gracemont E-cores get supported.

Due to the increase in CPU cores, the Intel Core i5 processors are also increasingly suitable for more demanding applications. The Intel Core i5-13600K is even faster than the 2020 AMD Ryzen 9 5900X, which has 12 equally sized Zen 3 cores. The AMD Ryzen 5 7600X, which was actually designed as an opponent and has only 6 CPU cores, is so clearly outperformed by the Intel Core i5-13600K that one can no longer speak of the same class, but the Intel Core i5 processors with the latest ones AMD Ryzen 7 7700X processor, which still performs 15 percent slower in the Cinebench R23 multi-core benchmark than the Intel Core i5-13600K.

Mobile variants of the Intel Core i5 processors can be recognized by an appended H, M, U or Y. Only desktop variants with an attached K or KF can be overclocked, i.e. have a free multiplier. The memory can also be overclocked on other non-K models of the Intel Core i5 series.

The cache is usually smaller compared to the larger Intel Core i7 or Intel Core i9 processors, which is also due to the reduced number of CPU cores. In addition, the clock frequency of the Intel Core i5 processors is slightly lower than that of the larger series.

Since many PC games still have problems using all CPU cores - this is especially true for hyperthreading - the Core i5 processors in the desktop area are usually completely sufficient for current games. In the mobile area, on the other hand, the Intel Core i7 or Intel Core i9 processors also make sense for PC gamers, since they have more physical cores, which can be clearly noticeable in games.

The newer generations of Intel Core i5 processors, on the other hand, support Hyper-Threading (SMT) and usually have slightly fewer cores than the high-end processors of the Intel Core i7/i9 family. Nevertheless, the current Intel Core i5 processors are ideal for a gaming PC and can also use modern graphics cards almost completely.
